The U17 Academy Boys began their season on a high note with a 2-0-1 record and first place in their division at the College Cup Showcase in Birmingham, AL.
The boys got off to a flying start against Columbus FC (GA) with Johnny Williams striking a first time laser from 19 yards with the assist coming from Dave Piotrowski. Jon Lundeen helped maintain the lead with a few top flight saves and controlling his penalty box until OE could extend its lead when Joey Kunkel converted a penalty midway through the second half. The spot kick was earned by Williams being taken down in the penalty box after beating the back line off the dribble and getting ready to shoot. OE lost the shutout in injury time but earned a well-deserved 2-1 victory.
On Saturday, they returned to action against Charlotte United. The boys put together another strong effort and a 3-2 win against a quality opponent. OE jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Mosi Clark finished from the top of the box after quality possession from the team. Charlotte answered with two quick goals and gave OE its first and only deficit of the tournament. Johnny Williams scored his second of the weekend with another tremendous strike from distance. Kevin Barbour put the team ahead for good just a few minutes after halftime by redirecting a pass from Mosi Clark.

On the final day, the U17 Academy faced Eclipse (IL). The game started out very positive with Marty Bixler notching a goal. Johnny Williams put in another strong performance and put the team ahead 2-0 with the assists from Bixler and Patrick Henry. However, the Eclipse mounted a furious comeback scoring two late goals to earn the draw. With the 2-0-1 mark, the U17 Academy won the division.
“The team really played well. The boys took a lot of what we have been training on and implemented into games. We still have a long way to go, but this is a terrific start,” stated Coach Mike Cullina.
The U17 Academy will next play at the Disney Showcase in Orlando, FL from December 27-30.
