The only building at Gimnasia y Esgringa La Plata that has a wireless connection was being used for the First Team who was on campus in preparation for a very important match. Internet access should be much more available for the players and coaches from here on out.

All the players arrived early to the Dayton Airport and the check-in process was smooth, even for our first time flyer Rielly. The boys traveled very well even with a 4.5 hour lay-over in Atlanta. We were all entertained by Mark Coghlin’s pacing in hopes that the family could get on our flight and fortunately they did.

Most of the players slept 2-4 hours on the 10-hour flight. In-flight movies – Ides of March and Moneyball.

ITP - Argentina | Gimnasia y Esgringa La Plata | Day 2

We were able to get through the payment of the reciprocity fee and customs in about an hour. Everyone’s luggage arrived and our guides, Sergio and “Nacho” were there to greet us and load the bus. The hour-long trip to La Plata through the northern part of Buenos Aires took us by the Argentine Futbol Association and Boca Juniors stadium.

The coaches and players’ facility was not yet ready as we arrived due to the storms of the previous two days. (The parents are in beautiful apartments in downtown La Plata about 30 minutes away.) By the time we ate lunch – wonderful pasta, bread, coke, water and ice cream – the rooms were ready.

We thought the boys would take a nap, but it turns out the only one who passed out was coach Sabin. It is very unusual to allow any visitors on the campus on the day prior to a match. They very much guard the relaxation and preparation of the professional team, especially since our building is only 50 feet apart. Our kids were extremely respectful of the request for quiet.

Instead of a light session in the afternoon we decided to warm the boys up and play an hour-long soccer tennis match in the gym. The boys were anxious to touch the ball and had a great time until Ryan Hadley volleyed a ball too high and broke a ceiling light. The four-man team of Jared Grubich, Bryce Schweirling, Mike Coghlin and Rielly Dowling won the first 5 or 6 matches and dominated the hour-long session.

Lights out at 10:30 and the boys were quickly out.

Saturday, February 18, 2012

ITP - Argentina | Gimnasia y Esgringa La Plata | Day 3

The people of Gimnasia are absolutely top rate. They are treating us very well and have almost become too accomodating. Their hospitality is unbelievable and we are all grateful.

More than one player stated that this "was the greatest day of my life!". Unless you have experienced what we did today it is impossible to understand. I'll explain more later.

With all of us asleep pretty early and with 2 rooms of 3 players, 1 room of 4 and 1 room of 7 we really didn't feel the need to set an alarm. Breakfast was scheduled for 8am and coach Sabin was the first to wake up at 7:55.

Training was from 9:30-11. The profession team's head and assistant coaches stopped by to greet the players and the youth team coaches conducted the all-technical session. I had the chance to meet with the staff after training and compare our ideals and culteral differences and its very difficult for them to understand how different our environment is for the players. It was a wonderful exchange and one I truly enjoyed.

After yet another meal (we seem to eat all the time and the national beverage is coke), we loaded the bus for the match between Gimnasia and Rosario Central. The match was supposed to be held at the new state of the art 45,000-seat La Plata Stadium but the head coach chose the old stadium which holds only 25,000 but it much more intimate. The two teams were both relegated to the second division last year and currently sit 1-2 in the promotion table back to the top division next year so the match was very important for both teams.

We were treated unbelievable at the match. The group entered the stadium through the Gimnasia locker room as the team returned from warm-ups. They took us to the field and took picture on the playing surface. We were the guests of the team president and sat in the owner's box. Most of the players and both coaches were able to get seats just outside the box.

It is impossible to explain the atmosphere so I won't try, but the match ended 1-0 on a very questionable penalty for the home side with 5 minutes left. Both teams finished the match with only 9 players and the away fans tore chairs from the concrete and threw them over the fence. Gimnasia went from a player up to a player down and back to even in about 10 minutes. The Gimnasia coach was sent off and needed to be restrained by the police and the Rosario coaches went after the referee after the match. A group of Rosario fans actually went after the riot police and the only disappointment amongst our players was that they pulled the water canon and pointed it at the skirmish, but never actually used it.

Note - the home fans are locked in the stadium after the match for about 30 minutes to give the away team fans time to "escape". After witnessing my first match in this country I completely understand why!

Tomorrow we have a full training session with the youth team coaches and they have promised a very demanding session for the boys. The highlight for tomorrow is the match between Independiente and San Lorenzo in Buenos Aires.

Buenos Noches.

Follow the rest of the trip at www.ohioelite.blogspot.com

Alex Hadley, an Ohio Elite alum, is working his way into contention with the Indiana Hoosier soccer team. After joining Ohio Elite as part of the US Soccer Development Academy, Alex quickly became the rock for the U18 squad. Playing several roles in midfield and defense, Hadley set the tone with his ball winning, technique, and leadership. Being recruited by several schools, Alex took his talents to the University of Cincinnati. He quickly earned a starting role as centerback and led the Bearcats in minutes his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Following his sophomore campaign, Alex realized something was missing, “I wasn’t completely happy with the environment I was in.”

Searching for a place that met his academic and athletic goals, Alex researched several options and spoke to his Ohio Elite coaches on what might be a good fit.

“I initially looked at schools with soccer programs that I felt were as competitive if not more, and then narrowed my search based upon each school’s college of business. I looked at Clemson University, a team I had talked to late in recruiting my senior year. I also looked at Wisconsin, Ohio State, St. Louis, and of course Indiana,” stated Hadley.

After two strong seasons at UC, Hadley made a decision to leave the city and head to the college town of Bloomington and re-prove himself as a Hoosier.

OhioElite.com recently got in touch with Alex Hadley for a conversation on his experiences after transferring from Cincinnati.

OE: How has your transition to IU been? Is it what you expected? How is it different from UC?

ALEX: I’d say my overall transition to IU has been good, it’s not been as smooth or perfect of a start that I would have liked, but it's everything I wanted and was looking for. IU has a longstanding tradition and is renowned for always having one of, if not, the best soccer programs in the nation. Combine that with recently polled business program ranked top five in the nation behind Harvard University and Stanford University, and I got exactly what I wanted, a place to push myself and try to be the best of the best.

Indiana is very different from the University of Cincinnati. It’s a Big Ten program versus a Big East program, a huge college town with a huge campus versus a large city school with a relatively small campus. I really enjoyed the “city living” aspect of Cincinnati, being involved and around more than just the university there, seeing the city, the culture and all it had to offer; however, I love the feel of a college town, close knit community even though the school is huge.

OE: How has your experience at UC and in the Big East helped with joining IU?

ALEX: My experience at UC and in the Big East was everything in helping me join IU. Playing for Cincinnati in the Big East really gave me an idea of the college level and the speed of play and the caliber of players there are out there. People don’t really understand, but the Big East is one of the best conferences in the nations, with teams like Notre Dame, UCONN, Louisville, Georgetown, among many others with great programs, it was a great learning experience, and a humbling one. Without my two seasons at UC I would have never have been the player I am today or have even gotten an opportunity with such a great program at IU.

OE: Advice for current Ohio Elite players that would like to play collegiate soccer…Areas of the game to focus on? Lifestyle? Academics?

ALEX: My advice to any Ohio Elite players looking to play collegiate soccer, whether it be NAIA, D3, D2, or D1 and beyond, is don’t get behind. Swallow the frog. If there are areas that you as a player need to work on, work on them now, and work hard. If you need to work on positioning, watch games, touches or finishing go out and work on it, stay after practice. I can’t tell you enough how hard it is the further you move along in your soccer career to catch up with better players at higher levels, because there is always someone better than you, period.

Adjusting here at IU, I know more now than ever that I’m going to have to get extra touches on the ball after practice or make time during the day just to keep up and compete at this level. The same goes for academics. I’ve never had harder classes or larger amounts of homework than I do now, and am having to cut into hours of sleep that I need to rest for workouts and practice just catch up.

Your lifestyle is your choice, if you think you can go out and party, perform, and do well in school, hey, enjoy. But I guarantee you that’s not the case, and when you have thousands of dollars in tuition or scholarship on the line, and more importantly your future when you graduate and step into the real world, everyday you don’t take advantage of eating right, getting enough sleep, etc. and it causes you to underperform, you’re just wasting time and money. Easiest advice I can give is to play hard, work harder, know what you want, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t, and do everything possible to get it. Sounds cliché but it’s best advice I can give.

Want to say thank for the interview, thank you to Ohio Elite, especially the coaching staff, Marc Sabin, Mike Cullina, Dave Schureck, and team admin Ron Coates. You guys gave me really everything I would have needed to know to prepare myself for the college level and do well. I had one of the best times of my career playing for you guys, had a ton of fun, and gave me a lot of confidence going into college. I really appreciate everything and hope you all and others can come out and catch a game this year.

Eskilson, ESNN

The Ohio Elite U16 Girls have moved to the ECNL Midatlantic Conference this season after spending the last few seasons in the Midwest, which has made for a "unique situation" according to head coach Tim Lesiak.

"We are in a pretty unique situation because we moved to the Midatlantic Conference this year, so we are playing a lot of teams we don’t normally get to play," said Lesiak. "For us, we get the best of both worlds because we play cross-conference games, against old rivals like Michigan Hawks, and now new teams in this conference."

With a 4-0-0 record to start conference this season, the move appears to have fit the team pretty well. Lesiak attributes a collective effort from all of his players to the great start to the season.

"We aren’t giving up a lot of goals," said Lesiak. "I think that is because of our organization on the field and team defending."

Maranda Melton

The coach went on to describe his team’s style of play as unrelenting high-pressure with a focus on possession when it wins the ball back. And like many teams, Ohio Elite has set its focus on qualifying for the National Finals at the end of the season.

While it has been a group effort to maintain four clean sheets in seven games, Lesiak highlight the play of his four defenders and two goalkeepers for their tireless effort to lead the team to a 6-1-0 overall record.

"We have played with the same back four for every game, except for an injury here or there," said Lesiak. "The normal back four have been playing together for three years. When you talk about consistency, it comes from those kids playing so much together."

Lesiak’s normal defense consists of Lauren Heger, Madeleine Pescovitz, Darby Schwarz, and Megan Niebuhr. The coach also highlighted the play of the goalkeepers Brooke Mauro and Anna Hall who he said are "playing the best they have ever played."

Offensively, Maddie Huster is the standout. Huster, who is a member of the U15 national team, plays as a center midfielder for Ohio Elite.

"We kind of roll with how Maddie rolls," said Lesiak. "She is a central midfielder, but she is more like a withdrawn striker. Everything through the midfield comes through her, she is probably most dangerous in the final third."

Chasing Lesiak’s team in the standings is FC Delco, which just started its season, and McLean Youth Soccer. ECNL standings are based on points per game rather than overall points.

Ohio Elite has yet to play FC Delco, but did already face McLean in the first game of the season for the Cincinnati based club. Ohio Elite won 2-1 in a close contest. Lesiak complimented the opponents by referring to them as one of the "best teams we’ve faced this season."

U17 Midatlantic Conference

FC Delco and FC Virginia lead the charge in the U17 Midatlantic Conference, but closing in on their shadows is Bethesda SC, which is third in the table with a 3-1-1 record to the start the season.

"We’ve had some immediate success," said Bethesda SC U17 coach Jonathan Morgan. "We were fortunate enough to train twice a week during the fall when the girls had high school soccer so we felt prepared going into the ECNL season."

Morgan went on to say that the scheduling has been fortuitous too, as his side has mainly played teams that have just now started the season, but soon Bethesda will face the Virginia clubs, which are at the end of their season.

The difference in the amount of games played was apparent in the lone loss of the season for Bethesda, according to the coach.

"We had a great opportunity to win that game," said Morgan. "They were seasoned and more prepared to deal with management of the game once they gained the lead."

Bethesda had the lead early, but eventually gave up two goals and lost 2-1 in the third game of the season for the Maryland club. The loss has not deterred any ambitions for this team. The goal remains to finish in the top eight in the national standings.

Morgan said that the team had too many things going on at the same time at the end of the season last year, and decided to turn its full focus on the ECNL this year.

One high profile team member as it drives toward postseason success is U17 national team star Andi Sullivan, who has only appeared in one game for her club team this season due to the heavy schedule of camps leading up to CONCACAF Qualifying coming up this Spring.

"She has a pretty big role with the U17s, so we have to be careful with the minutes she plays," said Morgan. "It is a balance to keep her sharp with a fair amount of games."

Morgan also spoke about the strong play from a quartet of players who have helped the team to a strong start to the season.

"I’d say our standouts so far have been Cortney O’Connell, Tyler Lussi, Alexandra Grossman, and Jordan Coburn," said Morgan.

The coach added that he is excited to have this group back in full training and about the upcoming competition. Bethesda returns to ECNL action on Saturday against Richmond Strikers.

Ohio Elite Wins Fourth 2011 State Cup

The Ohio Elite Boys U14 Academy finished off an impressive State Cup for the club, bringing home its fourth Championship in 2011 with a 1-0 victory over CUP Gold. In addition to the US Youth Soccer Ohio South State Cup title, the team is also the two-time defending US Club Soccer Ohio Cup champions.

The match started with both teams displaying quality possession leading to a couple half-chances for each. Just moments after Zane Ross, who assisted on the game-winner in the semi-finals, nearly connected with Reid Abney, who scored the game winner in the semi-finals, the Ohio Elite defense cleared the ball from their own goal area.

Then, it happened! With nearly 20 minutes played, co-captain Max Pochobradsky saw the opposing goalkeeper off his line and took a shot from 40 yards out. The CUP goalkeeper made the initial save, but Connor Hawkins was there for the rebound tucking it neatly in the side net for the 1-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Jake Mutlu and defender Daniel Bundschuh led the defensive stand in the second half to preserve the victory. Even with the increased pressure, OE maintained its composure and had a couple chances of their own late in the game to seal the win, but CUP defenders twice cleared the ball from their own goal line. The shutout streak for the team is now more than 630 minutes spanning more than 8 games, including all 5 during the tournament.

Head coach Mike Cullina said, “I can’t say enough about the work rate and organization of the entire team. We lost a few leads late in games during the fall season and the boys learned from it. At half-time we talked about how those experiences prepared us for this moment and it was incredibly rewarding as coach to see them learn from our past failures to secure this wonderful victory.”

The team was coached in the final preliminary and semi-final matches by Asst. DOC, Marc Sabin who said, “Seeing the boys celebrate after the game and knowing how far this group has come was great. This is a tremendous day for them and the program. I am glad to play a part and am very proud of them.”

The victory comes on the heels of an impressive run for the boys U16 Academy which fell in the semi-finals to the eventual champions and the boys U15 Academy which tied the eventual champions in pool play but narrowly missed advancing out of their bracket after going undefeated.

“I couldn`t be prouder of growth and development of our players throughout the club over the past three years and today was very rewarding,” said Mike Cullina, Boys Director of Coaching. “The ability of the team to continue their play at such a high level and advance to the final without their head coach is a testament to our entire club.”

“It has been five years since a boy’s team at Ohio Elite won a State Cup and four since one made it to the semi-finals, but I look at more than just our State Cup and the progress we have seen from the entire boys program over the past few years is incredible,” said Tim Lesiak, Executive Director of Coaching. “We are proud to have four teams representing Ohio South at Regionals.”
